Our class has been chosen to represent Kansas in a nationwide postcard exchange.  We'll be sending a postcard to the other 49 states, while also receiving postcards from them.  It'll be a great way for our class to see what other students in other states have to say.

Our class has been paired up with a second grade class in California, a 2/3 combo class in Washington, and a 4th grade class in Casablanca Morocco.  I don't have all the details yet, but each student will be sending and receiving letters from the other class.  More information will be available soon.

One thing that I forgot to put in the newsletter. This Friday (the first) is the May Crowning. Each student is asked to bring at least 1 flower, it can be real or fake. Please remember to send one to school with your child on Friday. Parents are more than welcome to come to mass and the crowning. Mass starts at 8:15 and the crowning will take place right afterwards.

Thank you!

1B parents,

The first grade has been asked to restart an old SHCS tradition. The second grade students are completing their first communion this coming weekend and the teachers have thought it would be nice if the first graders could throw them a small party. It's nothing big, we thought we could gather up a sheet cake, peanuts, mints, punch (or some other drink) and maybe donuts or cookies. The other first grade will be helping out too, so it's not all up to our class. The plan is to have the party sometime in the morning on Tuesday the 5th. There are approximately 30 second graders and there won't be any parents there, it's just for the students. If you're able to help out with food, drinks or plates/cups, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!

Here's what we'll be working on for the coming week:

Religion: We're finishing up our chapter on how we can help the parish and will start the Sacraments chapter next.

Reading: By the end of the week, we should have finished our current chapter and taken our assessment. All students need to remember to be working on their AR books. We're still working on our goal of 1.5 per student per month. If you ever want an update on your child's score, let me know a day in advance and I can get it to you. Thursday is the last day for this month's AR scores. They might be able to squeeze in 2 more tests this week if they need it.

Math: We'll continue to work with clocks, rulers (measuring our plants), and more work with coins. We'll also keep working on carrying and borrowing.

Phonics: This week week we'll be working on dipthongs ou and ow, and vc/ccv, vcc/cv rules. Like always we'll have our spelling test this Friday. All the words and sentences will also be available on our class website.

Science: We'll continue to monitor our newly planted grass and plants. By the end of the week we might be ready to take our plants test, but more than likely it'll be at the beginning of next week.

A few reminders:

-Everyone needs to be working towards their 1.5 point AR goal. The last day is Thursday.

-The last set of book orders will go out today and they'll have to be due this Friday so we can get them back before the end of school.

-Thank you to all who have helped out with Box Tops, we're still doing very well. The end is near, but don't stop now!

-If anyone has pictures from the field trip or spring concert they'd like to share, I'd love to see them and post them on the website.

Thank you,

John Smithhisler

Growing our own plants and grass PDF Print E-mail

Every student will be in charge of their own cup of grass and plant seed.  They will place the cups where they believe it will get the right amount of light and traffic.  They will also be in charge of how much, or how little, water the seeds will receive and how much soil each seed will be planted in.  Along with watering the grass, they'll also be in charge of upkeep (using scissors to "mow").  Mandatory mowing will occur once the grass reaches 6 inches.  At the end of the day, each student will measure and report the height of their new grass/plant.  All data will then be graphed on a chart.

We have some very talented writers in our class and what better way to show them off, but to put them on the web.  Our authors can now show off their styles and artwork to the world.  This is only a small fraction of what we've done this year, more will be added later.  Enjoy!

"Hi everyone, welcome to Mr. Smithhisler's first grade web page.  We're located at Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Dodge City, KS.  On this site, you'll be able to find everything needed to keep you up to date on what 1B is up to during the school week and year.  I will try to keep this up-to-date as much as possible.  On the links above, you'll be able to navigate around our site.  The "Pictures" link will allow you to view pictures from our classroom and activities that we've participated in.  In the "Letter to Parents" link, you'll be able to read the exact same letter that was sent home to you in your child's communicator.  The "Important Dates" link will list some,  if not all, important dates for our class and school.   In the "Notes from School" section, I'll post all current fliers that have been sent home with your child.  They'll stay up until they're no longer relevant."

On the website you'll find everything 1B has going on.  There are pictures, assignments, important dates, contact information, AR goals and plenty more!
