The Library celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday during the week of March 2.  Our guest readers were Mrs. Barbara Straight and Mrs. Martha Pfannenstiel.  Mrs. Pfannenstiel was dressed as the "Cat in the Hat" and read books to the Kindergarten students.  The students were so excited!  Mrs. Straight read  "Oh the Places You Will Go" to the 5th and 6th graders.  A discussion of their future plans followed.  The students wanted to know when Mrs. Straight will come again!  Many thanks of appreciation go to our guest readers!

During the month of February the 7th grade students participated in a "Poetry Slam".  Students selected their favorite poem and shared it with the class.  Each week students voted for their favorite poem.  Some poems began to be eliminated until finally the top three poems were the winners.  Third place:  Adrienne Bentley - "The Homework Machine".   Second place:  Karen Umana - "Raindrops".  First place:  Gabby Mendoza - "The Wind is Calling Me Away".   Congratulations to our "Poetry Slam" winners!

7th grade students are doing a "Poetry Slam".  Each student selected a favorite poem.  Every week the class votes for their favorite poem.  Poems with the fewest votes each week will be eliminated.  Voting continues until we get to the "Final Four" poems.  Then we will select our overall favorite poem which will be the "Champion"!

Many new books have arrived and have been catalogued into the Library.  Several more new books will arrive in the next few weeks.  Students are enjoying previewing them and checking out a "new book"!

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Chipman

Happy New Year from the SHCS Library!   2012 is off to a good start for students in the Library!  Fifth through Eighth grade students have been writing their New Year Resolutions.  They seem to be resolving to continue making good grades, showing respect for others, and trying to get along with their friends, teachers, and family members.  These are excellent goals!

Eighth grade students will continue their "Buddy Reading" with the second graders this semester.   We hope this activity will be beneficial to all students!  I have received several new books for the Library and will be putting them on the shelves in the near future.  Come visit our Library anytime!

Happy Reading!

Mrs. Chipman

Hello from the Library!

We are off to a GREAT start in the SHCS Library!  Students know the expectations of the Library:

1.  Enter the Library with no talking.

2.  Do what is right.

3.  Do the best you can.

4.  Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Kindergarten and First grade students have been reading "Clifford" and "Mercer Mayer" books, and Second grade students are making a Poetry Journal.  Third and Fourth grade students have been discussing "Respect" and "Responsibility".  Fifth through Eighth grade students have been discussing and previewing the new books which arrived this summer.

I am looking forward to a great year in the Library!

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Chipman, Librarian
