Happy New Year 3rd grade parents & students! I hope your 2017 is off to a great start!
January is a busy month. We are making sure we did not lose any ground from Christmas break. We are continuing our Multiplication timed tests. Please check your child's Homework Folder every night to see if they passed or need some extra practice. Even 5 - 10 minutes of extra practice will make a BIG difference. We try to do as much as we can at school, but sometimes we need a small boost from home as well. While we continue to put our main focus on mastering multiplication, we have started learning the basics of division and we will continue that for most of the month. A very important time for math!
In Religion class we will be working on the four marks of the church, different skills that the church teaches us and prayers. Then, at the end of the month and into the first few days of February is Catholic Schools Week! A very fun and busy week! Hopefully, third grade will even be in the school talent show!!!
We have started cursive! We will be doing this every day now and we will work our writing activities into centers, grammar or other subject areas. Please check our papers when they come home to see how we are doing and how we continue to improve! Your child will love a compliment about their new handwriting!
In Reading, we are always working on comprehension and fluency (how fast & clearly we read), among other skills. I know your child is getting older, but I do not think any child is too old to read to. Sit down and enjoy a picture book or start a chapter book together (something to look forward to each night). Talk about the story as you go; what do you think will happen next, describe the characters in the book, what is your favorite part, how would you change the story? Don't forget that we participate in the Pizza Hut Book-it program! Track your time and send your chart to school on the first of the month. Then, enjoy a family night out at Pizza Hut!
Phonics is a review year for 3rd grade, but we connect our Spelling to go along with it. Each week there should be some kind of pattern with the words. We talk about this pattern throughout the week. This pattern should help your child when they practice their spelling words. Ask your child what the pattern or skill is that you are working on.
One other important reminder; our school's Silent Action is on January 28th (Saturday). This is a fun event for parents and adults. Bring your friends and neighbors to help raise money for our school. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year!! Hope to see everyone there!
Once again, Happy New Year! Thanks for being a great group of students & parents!!
